A Step-by-Step Guide to Completely Remove Mould From Your Car

What is Mould?

Mould is a type of fungi. It thrives in areas where moisture and high humidity are present. It could be black, blue, brown, or green in colour, and often feels slimy in texture.

Why is Mould Dangerous?

Moulds produce spores which enable them to propagate and spread quickly, and of course, they grow on a variety of surfaces, such as bathrooms, food substances, kitchens, walls, furniture, and even car interiors. It’s these tiny spores that pose serious health risks to people with mould allergy and others with compromised immune systems.

The presence of mould can lead to bouts of asthma, dizziness, dry cough, headaches, nausea, fatigue, lung infections, skin irritation, sore throat, and various health challenges. Symptoms could include eye irritation, sudden fever, shortness of breath, wheezing, and nasal congestion. That’s why it’s important to avoid exposure to mould, especially in a place you’re most likely to spend much of your time, such as in your car.

Fortunately, if you notice mould in your car, there are simple steps you can take to resolve the problem. In this piece, we’ll show you how to remove mould from your automobile altogether.

Simple Steps to Remove Mould From Your Car

So your car is under mould invasion? Act quickly and start removing the invaders by following these simple steps:

Step 1: Protect Yourself

When cleaning mould from your car, ensure you wear a facial mask and a strong pair of household cleaning gloves for protection. These will significantly reduce the likelihood of excessive exposure to mould and its harmful toxins.

Step 2: Air Out Your Vehicle In The Sun

Like other types of fungi, mould thrives well in wet and humid areas. So, fresh air and sunlight are potent weapons used to combat mould invasion. The powerful combination dries out your car and virtually prevents mould from surviving.

Ideally, park your car in a cool, sunny spot and then open up the doors and windows, including the sunroof if there’s one. Allow any dampness to dry out in a few hours.

Step 3: Inspect Your Car Thoroughly

It’s advisable to carefully inspect your car to determine the spots needing more attention. Check such areas as the surface of your car seats, underneath the seats, seat belts, seat side seams, and steering wheel.

Remember we told you at the beginning that mould varies in colour. Therefore, be on the lookout for typically circular areas of black, brown, grey, green, or white. These are areas to focus more on while cleaning.

Step 4: Spray with Anti-Microbial Solution

At this point, you may now spray the affected areas with a strong anti-microbial solution. However, before doing so, do your best to remove mould patches by brushing up with a toothbrush. Then, take out your affected car seat covers and carpets for replacements. They can’t be remediated.

You may also spray other areas of your car where the fungus has infiltrated, including the air vent, dashboard, and steering wheel.

Step 5: Remove the Residue

After removing the mould, use a good wet-dry vacuum to vacuum up the liquid solution used completely. On the other hand, wait for those areas to dry out first, then sweep off the mould residue.

Step 6: Replace the Sanitised Items and Prevent Mould from Ever Coming Back

After you’ve used the anti-microbial solution, washed, and dried out the affected areas, it’s time to put back the car parts you might have detached, then replace your seat covers and carpets if they’re affected too.

One important tip you should be aware of is this: mould requires moisture to grow. Therefore, make sure to prevent it from making a comeback by keeping your car interior dry always. A dehumidifier can help lower moisture levels in your vehicle at any time.
